The fire broke out at around 9.30am in an apartment on Rue Villeneuve and quickly spread to the entire apartment building.

After almost two hours, firefighters still hadn’t been able to bring the flames under control, said Daniel Deslauriers, spokesman for the Longueuil fire department.

“At the moment it is impossible to determine the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage,” he added, specifying that no injuries have been reported at the moment.

A total of 16 homes were evacuated to allow firefighters to do their jobs. “We evacuated the neighboring building, which was also damaged,” Mr Deslauriers said.
