– Russia believes that the risks of nuclear war should be kept to a minimum and that any armed conflict between nuclear powers must be avoided, the TASS news agency said on Saturday, citing a State Department official.
Vladimir YermakovHead of the Department of Nuclear Non-Proliferation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that all nuclear powers must adhere to the logic laid down in official documents to prevent a nuclear war.
Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrovsaid that on Monday The West should not underestimate the high risks of a nuclear conflict by Ukraine, although the United States later said that despite an escalation of rhetoric from Moscow, it did not believe Russia would use nuclear weapons.
Yermakov was quoted as saying on Saturday that the major nuclear powers must abide by the logic enshrined in the documents they jointly drafted.
He referred to a Joint statement released by Russia, China, the United Kingdom, the United States and France in Januaryin which the five countries that are permanent members of the United Nations Security Councilagreed that the further dissemination of nuclear weapons and nuclear war must be avoided.
“The risks of a nuclear warthat should never be triggered should be kept to a minimum, particularly by preventing any armed conflict between nuclear powers,” Yermakov said on Saturday, according to TASS. “Russia is clearly following this agreement.”
