New report suggests Daniel Snyder may not sell the Commanders

From the moment Commanders owner Daniel Snyder announced he was considering the possibility of selling the team, some wondered if it was a ruse, a ruse or an attempt to buy time. To take the heat out of the proverbial hot kitchen.

Those who thought so might have stumbled upon something.

Just a day after the Washington Post reported that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos hired an investment firm to explore a possible bid for the team, the New York Post ran an article suggesting that Snyder might not own the team at all sold.

It’s not the headline. But it’s the unequivocal conclusion of the new report, which claims top bids to buy the team were “well below” a $6 billion mark and that Bezos was “benched” by Snyder to to bid on the team.

And the body of the article finally ends the thought, noting that Snyder may choose to keep the team as he didn’t get the offer he wanted.

“He’s an ass and he might not want to give it up,” an unnamed source “who is closely watching the sale” told the New York Post.

Reports of applications for the team were everywhere. Forbes reported in December that Snyder received multiple bids “far north” of $7 billion. The Washington Post then reported that initial expressions of interest were received with a winning bid of $6.3 billion. Now the New York Post says the figure was “well under” $6 billion.

And why wouldn’t Snyder want Bezos in the bidding when Bezos could potentially give Snyder what he wants?

What Snyder might want is an excuse not to sell. What he can then provoke is a potential argument with his business partners about whether he should be ousted. Snyder may be ready to welcome this fight.

Caught in the midst of it all is a long-suffering fan base that Snyder just wants out. Maybe it’s time they made a loud noise to make sure Snyder doesn’t do what the New York Post article suggests.

And maybe it’s time the league told Mary Jo White to wrap up its investigation into Snyder and the team, which appears to have been mothballed since Snyder said he was planning to sell the team.
