Newspapers across the country are pulling the cartoon “Dilbert” from creator and author Scott Adams’ race rant podcast.

Adams said in his online video program Coffee with Scott Adams that whites should “stay away from blacks” and called blacks a “hate group.”

A satire on office politics, the Dilbert cartoon has been around for more than three decades. It has spawned a media empire with dozens of books, a video game, an animated television series, and thousands of coffee mugs and related merchandise. In 1997, Adams received the National Cartoonists Society’s top honor, the Reuben Award.

Cleveland’s The Plain Dealer published a letter to the editor Friday saying it wasn’t a “difficult decision” to drop the Adams cartoon. “We are not a home for those who speak out against racism,” the editor wrote. He added that Advance Media, its publisher, is taking similar steps at its other properties.

John Hiner of MLive Media in Michigan repeated the plain dealer. He wrote in an editorial, “We will work quickly to find a replacement that will entertain you and does not violate basic standards of decency and respect for others.”
