‘TQG’: the hidden references in the new song by Shakira and Karol G América Colombia

TQG, the new song by Shakira and Karol G, brings together the two Colombian artists with the biggest global projection to dedicate darts with pride and heartbreak to their exes. For three and a half minutes, the song, set on a slow reggaeton base, affirms his redemption from the sadness and sorrow of a breakup: “Never go back to you, you’re unlucky, for now the blessings are raining down on me”; “I saw what your girlfriend threw at me, it doesn’t make me angry, I laugh, I laugh.”

Gerard Piqué and Anuel AA overcome ties

The verses of the two, which are part of “Mañana ser bonito”, Karol G’s fourth studio album, have two recipients: In June 2022, a brief joint statement confirmed the end of the relationship between Shakira and former footballer Gerard Piqué after twelve years and two children together. Two months later, the 46-year-old interpreter for Elle Spain magazine opened up about their split, admitting it was “the most difficult and darkest hour” of her life. With an open wound and after admitting that writing music was “like going to a psychiatrist” again, in October 2022 Shakira released “Monotonía”, a collaboration with reggaeton artist Ozuna, who conveys a heartfelt message through bachata spread, which relieved both of the failure of their relationship: “It wasn’t your fault, nor mine, it was the fault of the monotony,” exclaims the chorus. Things have changed since then. In “TQG,” Shakira takes it “You’re outside looking for food, I say it’s been monotony.”

The Barranquilla native went on the offensive in January 2023 with “Session 53,” the duet with bizarre rap that broke listening records on Spotify and YouTube for a Latino artist. On the other hand, Karol G ended his relationship with Puerto Rican ragman Anuel AA in March 2022 after a three-year relationship. And although the speculation trying to reconcile the lyrics of her latest songs with an alleged infidelity (“If you can’t, don’t get in the way, you scored an own goal because you were clumsy” in ‘Mamiii’) do not stop. , the woman from Antioquia hasn’t made direct references to her ex-partner like Shakira did.

“TQG”: more than a message of support

Ten days after the start of Bizarrap’s “Session 53,” Karol G appeared on the front row of Crypto.com Arena, home of the Los Angeles Lakers, dressed in a sleeveless shirt that read “It’s too big for you.” ‘ . Although the news was seen as an act of solidarity with Shakira at the time, the appearance of the initials “TQG” appeared on giant screens in Times Square, accompanied by the message “Your favorite reality show is coming to an end” hours before the song premiered confirmed that it was the title of the new collaboration.

An exit to the simulation

At the beginning of the video, Karol G and Shakira appear on the screens. The broadcast, massively followed by huge panels and an airplane’s entertainment system, vanishes as the interpreter of “Tusa” is thrown out of a building into space, all from a video mixer where a man appears to be monitoring the recording. The theme continues on its course and the scene only returns at the end when both singers, clad in high boots and dressed all in black, appear in the frame of a doorway surrounded by a descending staircase and a background that pretends to be heaven be flanked. The main idea of the video, the escape from the simulation, is a direct reference to “The Truman Show” (1998), Peter Weir’s science fiction classic, in which Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) lives in a fictional environment, a kind of reality -Show that airs on TV until he realizes that everything around him is a lie and looks for a way out.
