Budget-conscious shoppers are making a beef with Costco — and ringing over the flashy price tag of the discount store warehouse’s newest food-court item.

The $9.99 roast beef sandwich that was on the menu at a Costco store in Lynnwood, Wash. last week was a big departure for a major retailer boasting its infamous $1.50 -combination of hot dog and lemonade has made a name for itself. $5 Whole Roast Chicken and $9.95 18-inch Pepperoni Pizza.

“Is that beef Wagyu?” hassled Reddit user wats6831.

“It should be for $10.”

The high-roller’s hoagie — a 790-calorie concoction of sliced roast beef, roasted cherry tomatoes, red onions, lettuce and onion relish on an “artisanal bun” — drew more than 500 disbelieving reactions when a Costco member shared a photo of the Laden’s published menu board on Reddit Sunday.

“Just a little more expensive than two whole fried chickens,” sniffed one shopper angrily.

“A fried chicken, a slice of pizza, and a hot dog with a drink is still cheaper than this sandwich,” said another bargain hunter. “Hard pass.”

“I just tried the sandwich,” claimed another. “It tasted good, but not $10 good… It’s hard to choose when you know you can get a whole pizza.”

Costco CEO Craig Jelinek announced in December that the major retailer has maintained its $1.50 price point for the hotdog-soda meal despite rising inflation by making its own francs — and by selling the Accepted cheap food as a loss maker to get hungry buyers in the door.

“Are we going to make a lot of margin out of this? No,” admitted Jelinek.

Other items sold in Costco’s food courts are similarly wallet-friendly. The chain charges $3.99 for a hot turkey provolone sandwich, $4.99 for a BBQ beef and brisket sandwich, and $1.99 for a slice of pizza.

The Lynnwood branch is located 30 miles from Costco’s headquarters in Issaquah, prompting speculation that the new Nosh is part of a nefarious corporate plan.

“So it looks like when the next new items come in at $7-8 apiece, they look like a good deal,” claimed one cynical commenter.

“Costco brides” have risen to fame on social media in recent months as shoppers seek bargains in an inflation-ridden economy.
