Eugenia León, guest of honor at the 30th Havana International Book Fair 2022, considered by many to be the best singer in Mexico, offered a press conference hours before her presentation in concert – this Saturday – at the Hotel Palacio de los Corredores in Old Havana , at 7:00 p.m.—, in the Covarrubias Hall of the National Theater. At this conference, she was accompanied by Santiago Ruy Sánchez De Orellana, Cultural Officer of the Mexican Embassy in our country.
In an open and courageous dialogue, the renowned artist, faithful representative of the Mexican cultural roots, who for more than 30 years defended the bolero, the ballad, the ranchera and the nueva trova movement in her native country, expressed the great joy and honor It represents for her that she was invited to the International Book Fair, for which she is grateful and gives her the opportunity to once again offer her songs to the Cuban public.
«I love Cuba. Cuba is our example, an important reference in my generation. A bastion of heroic inspiration, an example that it is possible, that another, better world is possible. You have a fighting people. There are the scientists. A people struggling to sustain their revolution, bravely facing a cruel blockade by a government that believes it is the sheriff of the world. That’s why I admire and respect her,” said the singer, touched.
Elsewhere in her speech, Eugenia León explained that today her country is regaining its dignity, which makes her happy and promises not only a better gift for her and all her compatriots, but also a different, better future that she also wishes for her Grandson. He explained that Mexico is therefore at a very important moment in its history, when the current government, led by López Obrador, is promoting a strong fight against electoral fraud and corruption in order to guarantee to all Mexicans a different Mexico, a new society.
“It makes me think and be sure that Mexico’s position will be able to accompany Cuba in overcoming the barrier that the United States is imposing on it today, and contribute to the unity of all Latin America in this effort. I wish Cuba the greatest success and I say once again that they are a heroic people who never tire of fighting and facing difficulties and who must be learned every day.”
When asked by this editor if his presence in the Greater Antilles might cause him any problems, he said, “I don’t care what you can tell me. I don’t have to ask anyone for permission to go anywhere. I think nobody should be rejected because they don’t think differently, the world is always changing and everyone has the right to think freely.
“I have already said that I have loved this country for a long time. I remember that when we were young we lent each other small records (cassettes) with the songs by Silvio, by Pablo. I was also part of the Nueva Trova movement in Mexico and we learned a lot from you. Today there are many young people in my country who are interested in Nueva Trova to express what they feel in an engaging way,” he stressed.
“In your case, beyond the song, the Nueva Trova undoubtedly implies the theme of defending the revolution. I’m one of those people who believe that you have to commit to the times you live in. My fellow musicians and everyone around the world need to be aware of which side of history they are on. You have to know which side you’re on, it’s time to stand up for just causes. I think you have to devote yourself to the history of the country you live in and that of other countries in the world,” said the singer.
