A cat found by a Henrico County, Virginia resident turned out to be that of a woman who lost her pet nine years ago.
After not hearing from her cat, Piper, the pet’s owner even called the company that microchipped him a few years ago to report him dead.
When Henrico County animal welfare officials found the cat, they located and examined the microchip.
After a few days of proceedings, they managed to get Piper and her landlady back together.
After being missing for 9 years – yes, you read that right – and believed to be gone forever, Piper the cat is back home with her owner!

The Henrico County Police Department, which shared photos of the reunion on Twitter, says it’s impossible to know how the cat survived all these years or why it left its owner.
But the latter was very happy to find her animal again, we are assured.
“The moral of the story is that microchips help pets find their families,” Henrico Police said in a series of tweets.
