Browns draft LSU kicker Cade York fourth-round seeded 124 and “love his mental makeup.”

BEREA, Ohio — The Browns now have a big-legged kicker in Cade York, who is doing well with fellow AFC North players in the Ravens’ Justin Tucker and Bengals’ Evan McPherson.

They made their fans happy on Saturday by knocking York out of LSU in the fourth round at No. 124. The choice was purchased trading from #44 on Day 2. They followed in the footsteps of the Bengals, who drafted McPherson in the fifth round last year, and watched him help kick Cincinnati into the Super Bowl.

He takes over the job from incumbent Chase McLaughlin, who struggled notably from 40-49 yards last season.

The Browns liked York so much that they sent special teams coordinator Mike Priefer to LSU to coach him. He was the first kicker off the board and will help the Browns with their offensive strategy as he can hit from 50 and out. He went 15 out of 19 from that distance in college.

“He’s a high-consensus player across the organization and we’re really excited to add him,” said Dan Saganey, Browns chief human resources officer. “We like his mental state. He has the mentality to kick.”
