UFC: Yohan Lainesse loses in the first round

In an all-Canadian duel, Quebec’s Yohan Lainesse lost by submission in the first round to Mike Malott at the UFC Apex complex in Las Vegas on Saturday.

This is the second loss in three fights for the Varennes native, who snatched a unanimous decision win from Darian Weeks on September 10th.

Lainesse (9-2-0) couldn’t capitalize on his three-inch range advantage. Malott (9-1-1) landed his first takedown and managed to execute a triangle choke to end the fight with 45 seconds remaining on the first attack.

Lainesse, nicknamed the “White Lion,” scored just one notable hit in the fight, compared to nine for his rival.

Malott also enjoyed an opening round win in his first UFC fight last April against Mickey Gall.

-Also, the main event of this UFC Fight Night gala has been cancelled. Nikita Krylov, who was scheduled to play against Ryan Spann, retired early in the evening due to illness.
