Joe Biden has just $250 million left to spend on military aid to Ukraine. According to White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki, congressional approval is required to allocate additional funds.

Last Thursday, Biden asked lawmakers for $33 billion for Ukraine, inclusive
20.4 billion in military aid, 8.5 billion in direct economic aid and 3 billion in humanitarian aid.

“We had $3.5 billion in military security aid. We have about $250 million left of that amount. So of course we will work to make it easier for the Ukrainians. But continuing to help them to make sure they have the weapons they need, the artillery they need, the equipment they need, it’s certainly urgent to move forward with that funding,” Psaki said at a news conference on May 12 Thursday.

Last week, President Biden announced a new $800 million military aid package that includes heavy artillery, missiles and unmanned vehicles, among other items.

In all, Washington has provided nearly $3.4 billion worth of security aid to Kyiv since Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine on February 24.

For its part, Russia has repeatedly criticized arms sales to Ukraine, saying that the country’s militarization increases the risk of arms “falling into the wrong hands” and escalating the armed conflict.
