Apart from flip-flops, active clothing is not permitted in the restaurant

Days after American singer Post Malone was refused entry to a rooftop bar in Perth, Australia, because of his tattoos, a similar case involving high-profile celebrities has surfaced. This time, popular actor Russell Crowe and his girlfriend Britney Theriot have been turned away from a restaurant in Australia for failing to meet the “smart casual” dress code, the New York Post reported. The couple then went to another nearby restaurant for lunch.

The incident happened as the couple went to Melbourne’s Mr Miyagi Fusion establishment for “a quick bite to eat” after a game of tennis. Since they were playing tennis, Mr. Crowe wore a Ralph Lauren polo shirt while Ms. Theriot wore her tennis skirt and was turned away by the restaurant staff when she saw their costumes.

Specifically, the restaurant described itself as “casual but chic” where “work clothes, athletic wear, singlets and thongs (flip-flops)” are prohibited. Owner Kristian Klein told the Daily Herald that the pair wore “shoddy gym gear.”

“We treat everyone equally. It doesn’t matter who you are or if you are Russell Crowe. We have a dress code that we enforce at all levels,” Mr Klein told The Herald Sun on Friday.

He added: “We’re not trying to teach people how to dress. But I know personally that I won’t try to go to a nice restaurant wearing my thongs and my boardies because I wouldn’t be appropriately dressed.” The owner also said that the employee who served the couple refused service which ‘Gladiator’ actor didn’t recognize.

The restaurant later tried to shed light on the situation with a hilarious update on Instagram. “Dress smart casual unless you’re Russell Crowe, then wear whatever,” the sign said.

The restaurant also added a note regarding Mr Crowe’s visit, saying they would like him back.

The post read: “Dear Russell, It seems we caught the wrong foot on your recent visit. After much thought about what happened, we have permanently changed our dress code. We look forward to seeing you again in the future, you are always welcome at Mr. Miyagi’s.”
