Update for the latest…: Disney/Marvel’s Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania filmed its second weekend $363.6M global. Of that, $167.3 million is domestic and $196.3M from the international box office.

The second frame overseas was $46.4M in 52 markets with a smaller drop than North America and was 57% behind last weekend’s bug – which itself was still lower than forecasts, in part due to weakness in Asia-Pacific. It’s not the worst drop for Marvel, but it’s not great either.

The same theories from last weekend’s offshore launch still hold: Early critical results dampened wannabes, Star Wars-type sci-fi is hard to sell in some Asian markets, and the gap between Marvel films in China could be a challenge (amid a certain little appetite for Hollywood films there is generally). More will emerge in the coming months as several studio films line up for release.

Europe and Latin America are still looking good on AM3, and the overseas finals should reach into the $280 million arena while surpassing the $500 million mark globally.

The Threequel remains the No. 1 non-local film in all markets except Norway and Saudi Arabia (where Cocaine Bear and Plane took the top spots, respectively).

The worldwide to date on AM3 has exceeded the final gross of 4 MCU releases (The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Thor and Black Widow) at current rates and excluding Russia. Internationally, Quantumania is so far above The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Black Widow, Iron Man, Thor and Shang-Chi and also at current prices and without Russia.

The top 5 markets so far are China ($31.5M), United Kingdom ($17.8M), Mexico ($13.1M), Korea ($10.8M) and France ($9.5M).

Quantumania has grossed $32.5 million worldwide on IMAX.

In other Disney news, Avatar: The Way of Water has now arrived $2.267 billion worldwide incl $1.602 billion international. The current overseas frame waded to $9.4M down 20% in 52 markets. After 11 weekends, WoW is the highest-grossing film of all time in Europe (at current prices and excluding Russia).

The top 5 markets are China ($244.6 million), France ($150.3M), Germany ($141M), Korea ($107.7 million) and the United Kingdom ($92.3 million).

New this weekend was Universal’s Cocaine Bear, directed by Elizabeth Banks $5.3M international in order to strike a global chord $28.4M.

Playing in 50 markets, non-preview opens were above Violent Night and Beast and on par with Crawl. The United Kingdom led at $2m for #3 on the market. Australia launched in 243 locations with a $1M launch, with performance increasing across the frame thanks to Word of Maw. France, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, Italy and Germany follow.

Puss in Boots: Last Wish from Universal/DreamWorks Animation added another $7.4M out of 80 markets for a 30% drop to lift internationally $269.1M and global too $442.5 million. Offshore the Cume is 46% ahead of Sing 2 through Sunday and equals Sing and How To Train Your Dragon 3.

Meanwhile, an animated co-production from Warner Bros Spain that has been a bit under the radar, Mummies, enjoyed a big expansion this weekend. With an estimated $6.9M from 57 overseas markets, the international total to date $18.5M. Directed by Juan Jesus Garcia Galocha (who worked on the Tad: The Lost Explorer franchise), the film notably made its debut in Spain this session ranked #1 at $1.5M. Starting there is well ahead of recent comps with a strong week ahead as the school holidays in Madrid continue. WB made a strategic bet on the film, reportedly budgeted under $10 million, and began its phased offshore rollout in early January. The game will continue in the UK with a date of March 31. This is a co-production of 4Cats Pictures SL, Anangu Grup SLU and Moomios Movie AIE, distributed by Warner Bros. Entertainment España.
