What was the first Peruvian Super Cup and who won

What was the first Peruvian Super Cup and who won it?

Unlike other countries, Peruvian football doesn’t regularly have a cup tournament parallel to League 1, so there weren’t many opportunities to play a Supercup. Do you remember the first exception to the rule?

Many Peruvian soccer fans would like to have one Peruvian Super Cup as in the major leagues of Europe and others existing. It is an official title disputed between the champions of the league and the champions of the national cup (direct elimination with teams from lower leagues except the first). In cases like Spain and Arabia this is now disputed with the champions and runners-up. However, in Peru we have not had a Bicentennial Cup since 2021.

The 2019 Bicentennial Cup made it possible to stage the first and only Peruvian Super Cup the following year – under that name – between the winners Atlético Grau and Deportivo Binacional, the current national champions. However, this was not the first title fight between a champion and a cup winner in Peru: Eleven years ago, José Gálvez and Juan Aurich faced each other for the 2012 Federation Cup.

José Gálvez and his glory years

José Gálvez FBC is the most popular team in Chimbote and has made an important step through professional football in several years. Despite being in the Copa Perú today, the Strip has seen its best days in the last decade, winning three professional titles there in just two years. Gálvez was second division champion in 2011 and also won the intermediate tournament in the same year.

The 2011 Intermediate Tournament was the first major championship in the format of the Peruvian Football Cup. All the first-class teams, five second-class teams and 11 from the Copa Perú (these 16 selected at random) took part. José Gálvez eliminated the teams of Alianza Lima, José María Arguedas de Andahuaylas, Deportivo Municipal and Sporting Cristal, defeating Sport Áncash by two legs in the final.

José Gálvez and the 2012 Association Cup

The last of the three titles came after Galvez defeated Juan Aurich in the 2012 Federation Cup. This was the true Peruvian ‘Super Cup’, meeting 2011 Intermediate winner and 2011 Descentralizado winner Manuel Rivera at Sánchez Stadium Sunday 9th September 2012. Unfortunately this was not televised.

In the presence of Manuel Burga, then president of the FPF, Javier Arce’s José Gálvez came out with all his headlines. Standing out among them was Junior Aliberti, a Uruguayan who returned to national football in 2009 after his pass via Sporting Cristal. Aliberti made his debut with a goal and scored the only goal in the 1-0 win for the Chimbotanos after 44 minutes as they were efficient, cutting out midfield from Aurich.
