“It is necessary to interrupt the service on the neighboring sections and to evacuate several stations within a certain radius of the incident to allow the emergency ventilation of the tunnels and stations according to our protocols in force,” said the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) , by email.

At this point, operations on the orange line between Berri-UQAM and Snowdon stations and on the green line between Berri-UQAM and Angrignon stations were suspended.

The service should be resumed around 7:45 p.m., it said.

This is at least the third such incident on the Montreal subway since the beginning of the year.

In early January, two separate events occurred on the same day, including the presence of irritating gases that forced entire lines to be shut down and passengers to be evacuated.

The SPVM has launched an investigation to identify the suspect or suspects who may yet face charges of public mischief.
