Many citizens regret the authorities’ inaction while a white-tailed deer appears to be trapped in the ice in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield.

The images show the animal on the Beauharnois Canal in Montérégie. The deer would have been in this bad position since around 10 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Citizens who chose to take matters into their own hands to save the animal were denied access by police, who set up a roadblock, according to a citizen contacting TVA Nouvelles.

The same citizen regrets that no action has been taken to save the animal, despite numerous calls to the Department of Wildlife.

Contacted on this subject, the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield Fire Department states that they have taken measures adapted to the situation.

“A priori it is in the neighboring territory of Saint-Stanislas-de-Kostka, but first we were called,” explains the director of the service, Frédéric Paquette. The fauna was already there and it was decided not to intervene as the deer had the opportunity to retrace their steps along the bank,” reports the Journal Saint-François.

Mr. Paquette adds that human intervention could startle the animal, which could jump into the water.

In addition, the presence of people nearby could discourage the animal from returning to shore.
