Madonna’s older brother Anthony Ciccone has died at the age of 66.
On Saturday, Joe Henry took to social media to announce that his brother-in-law had died the day before. Joe Henry is married to Melanie Ciccone, sister of Madonna and Anthony Ciccone.
Alongside a black-and-white photo, he described Anthony Ciccone as a “complex character” who he also considered a “true brother.”
“The anger passes and the family stays – with their hands on the table. Farewell my brother Anthony,” he wrote. “I want to remember that the God your mother (and mine) believed in is there to welcome you. At least for today, no one will stop me from thinking about it.
No cause of death was given.
Madonna has not yet responded to this sad news. However, her friend Debi Mazar posted a tribute to Instagram this Sunday, in which she calls Anthony Ciccone a “true Renaissance man”.
“He was a prose writer, he loved literature, his Italian heritage, good wine and good food,” the actress posted. “He was someone I respected and he was brilliant. He fed my young soul. I will always remember his kindness and smile. My condolences to his entire family. He was loved very much.”
