The California roster has not played in the postseason of Major League Baseball since the 2014 season.

“It must be our year. It has to be,” said Trout, whose comments were reported by the New York Post.

The 31-year-old said good results were needed to convince the very talented Shohei Ohtani to stay with the Angels. Anyone who works as a pitcher and as a position player could become a free agent by the end of next season.

“It’s necessary if we want to keep Shohei,” Trout said. If we win and make the playoffs, he’ll be a little more concerned.”

The holder of three American League MVP honors (2014-2016-2019) also said he was very pleased with the work his organization put in this past offseason. General manager Perry Minasian has signed outfielder Hunter Renfroe and infielder Gio Urshela, as well as pitchers Tyler Anderson, Matt Moore and Carlos Estevez.

“I love that! [Minasian] did the job, getting big players and filling in the gaps in our lineup. It was definitely a great off-season. We’re going to have fun this year.”
