Sony has just unveiled its A95L TVs with QD-OLED technology and A80L with a White OLED panel, promising an ever-increasing peak of brightness, access to the Crunchyroll platform, a game bar but only 2 inputs HDMI 2.1. Here are all the details.
Traditionally, the CES in Las Vegas is the meeting place for the various players in the television market to present their new offerings. This year, however, Sony has decided to delay its announcements. For this reason, the Japanese brand has now presented its new TV series for 2023, which includes a total of seven series ranging from high-end models to the most affordable models: A95L (QD-OLED), A80L (White OLED) , X95L (mini LED), X90L (full array LED), X85L (full array LED), X80L (LED) and X75WL (LED).
Each of these series is available in different sizes ranging from 43 inches to 98 inches.
The A95L series, with its QD OLED panel, is the new benchmark for the Japanese brand
In particular, the Sony A95L series is the high-end series that adopts the QD OLED display technology developed by Samsung Display. It replaces last year’s Sony A95K and promises more brightness. It’s available in 55, 65 and 77 inches, with an aluminum frame and new feet that offer two different positions depending on whether you want to install a soundbar in the front or not. The 77-inch model also offers the option of having the legs in the middle, making it easier to install on a narrow piece of furniture.
The Sony A95L features Ultra HD resolution and packs all of the brand’s enhancement and image processing technologies, such as XR OLED Contrast Pro, XR Triluminos Pro, XR Clear Image, XP Upscaling and XR OLED Motion, all managed by the Sony XR chip. In addition, it features Acoustic Surface Audio+ technology that uses the screen as a source for sound diffusion. The TVs are Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos compatible and support the IMAX Enhanced format to take advantage of the built-in BRAVIA Core streaming platform, with 10 movies always on offer for 24 months.
Sony 2023 TVs work on Google TV with the most popular streaming platforms and a novelty: Crunchyroll, the world’s first animated content service (owned by Sony), is now available on the brand’s TVs and has a dedicated button on the new remote control.
An Eco Dashboard aims to help the user reduce energy consumption with several tricks to minimize TV consumption. You can also count on the integration of voice assistants.
Like the A95K series, the A95L TVs come with BRAVIA Cam. This is fixed at the top, middle, rear and allows certain automatic functionalities to be offered, such as the possibility of chatting with other people in video mode, sound orientation, presence detection or summary control by gestures.
In 2023, the Sony A95L is the only one that supports the Dolby Game Vision format for video games. However, like the other series of this year, it offers a game bar, similar to that of other brands. This game bar displays information about the type of signal used and allows you to adjust certain image parameters or even display a crosshair for better aiming.
In addition, the multi-view option allows two different content to be viewed at the same time, such as a video game on one side and a YouTube video on the other. The most demanding gamers and/or those who own multiple consoles may be disappointed to find that the number of HDMI 2.1 inputs is limited to two, including one compatible with eARC technology. Unlike MediaTek, the supplier of the chip that manages the HDMI inputs in particular, for which Pentonic 1000 had announced, only two HDMI 2.1 inputs are managed and not four. Also, these TVs come with Wi-Fi 5 (rather than Wi-Fi 6) and the Ethernet port is still limited to 100Mbps.
The A80L series with a white OLED panel from LG Display
The Sony A80L series follows the A90K, A83K and A75K. It consists of 55-, 65-, 77-inch models and an 83-inch model that wasn’t available on previous generations. It should offer less brightness than the A95L series since it uses a white OLED panel (OLED_EX) from LG Display.
This series also uses the Sony XR picture enhancement processor with the same image processing technologies as the A95L series, as well as Acoustic Surface Audio+. We can count on compatibility with Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and IMAX Enhanced formats, as well as the same streaming services as the A95L series. The game bar is still there, as are 2 HDMI 2.1 inputs. Sony offers three different positions for the feet, one of which allows a soundbar to be installed in the front without interfering with the infrared receiver. The camera is offered as an option.
The A80L series will be available in April, while the A95L series will not be available until late summer 2023. Sony has not yet announced prices for the different sizes.
