Born into a commoner family of farmers in Norway, Mette-Marit was a single mother at the time of her engagement to Crown Prince Haakon in 2000.

After the couple’s marriage in 2001, she became Crown Princess. Mette Marit has spent her reign advocating for humanitarian projects while attending official visits.

Their first official appearance was on December 10, 2000 at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony at Oslo City Hall, after the couple’s engagement was announced on December 1.
