Reviewing items in a small shop in Markyate, Hertfordshire, the expert noticed the signs which had a “somewhat East London theme”.
“These are from a London bus, they would have sat in the front of a frame and told you where the bus was going,” Mark explained.
“Inside there would have been a little handle that the driver would turn to change the target.
“So what do we have? Romford, Romford Station, we’ve got Cambridge Heath, we’ve got a bit of an East London theme.
“I can see these would be of interest to a lot of people and I love that East End vibe that’s going on.
“Imagine you cut these up and then frame them all and hang them on a wall and they’re not that common either.”
The signs cost Mark just £20 each, pleased with his find he took them to the W&H Peacock Auction Center to see how they would fare.
Auctioneer Lindsay Taylor began, “We have tons of commission-based bids. I have to start at £140.’
