However, the news was categorized as false information by the 35-year-old player’s entourage, along with French media outlet RMC Sport, on Thursday. It would be more of a publicity stunt organized by the company iDesign Gold, which is very present among soccer stars on social networks.

The company claims to have personally delivered all 35 phones to Messi. The 24k gold-plated items are engraved with the “Albiceleste” logo and the player’s or staff member’s name and number.

The bill for this generous gift: 210,000 euros or just over 300,000 Canadian dollars.

“Lionel isn’t just the GOAT [en anglais, Greatest of All Time], but he is one of our most loyal customers and contacted us a month after the World Cup final. He said he wanted a special gift to celebrate this incredible win. But he didn’t want the usual gift, watches. So I suggested it to him and he loved the idea,” iDesign Gold manager Ben Lyons told South American media TNT Sports.

Thanks to two goals in the Paris Saint-Germain star’s final, Argentina won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by beating France on penalties.
