Compare ‘Lovezinho’ and ‘Say it right’
Nelly Furtado danced, but also charged. The Canadian singer choreographed the Brazilian hit “Lovezinho,” which uses the uncredited melody of the chorus of her song “Say It Right.” Meanwhile, her publisher contacted Brazilian musicians to solicit copyrights.

WK told the podcast g1 belongs willing to lend part of the composition to the writers of “Say it right” (Nelly Furtado and North American producers Timbaland and Danja). The publisher Sony, which takes care of Nelly Furtado’s rights to the song, said that the request for an agreement came from the artist herself.
The Brazilian believes that a fair share for foreigners would be 20% of authorship, but negotiations between publishers (companies that manage musicians’ copyrights) are still ongoing.

❤️🕵️ The unusual (fact) order of ‘Lovezinho’:
- 📝 In July 2022, WK created an arrocha with the melody of “Say it right” by Nelly Furtado in the chorus.
- 🎤 He called Treyce to finish and record “Lovezinho”. But it didn’t burst immediately.
- 🕺 In early 2023, the track became a phenomenon thanks to a video by dancer Xurrasco.
- 👱♀️ 👱🏽♂️ Treyce and Xurrasco performed at Carnaval (and even found out they studied at the same college in Bangu, Rio, but had never spoken to each other).
- 📧 🚨 After the carnival came the notification from Nelly Furtado for Treyce and WK. Now the musicians are negotiating a division of copyright.
Nelly stole?
Treyce is 17 years old and was already successful in Rio with the songs “Vai malvadin” and “Me chama de amor”. They also use other melodies uncredited from “Malvadão 3” by Xamã and “Nothin’ on you” by Bruno Mars. The first national hit came with “Lovezinho”.
Treyce says he composed a small portion of the song, which was done almost entirely by his partner Wallace Kemps Benvindo Macedo, WK.

WK tells that g1 belongs that the idea started with an arrochadeira base, a more danceable variation of the Bahian arrocha. They were looking for a connection to the melody. “We found the chorus of Nelly Furtado’s song, and I modeled it,” says WK, owner of Studio Barulhando Tudo, in SP.
And how did he start with an arrochadeira in 2022 and end up in a Nelly Furtado song in 2006? “I looked for references in songs that were important and touched people’s feelings and emotions, and I was able to identify this one from Nelly,” says the composer.
“Say It Right” was released on the album “Loose”, a successful career turning point. She threw herself into R&B and danceable rhythms with Timbaland’s signature beat. This CD features the only two songs of their career to hit #1 on Billboard: “Say It Right” and “Promiscuous”.
‘Lovezinho’ open
WK is not upset about the need for an agreement. “It’s important to me that it’s like this. I’m open to negotiations. And it’s good for me to know that the music has already reached her and Timbaland. That means my work has spread,” says the 43yearold composer, who also cowrote “Faith,” from Iza.
“There was already an initial contact from Nelly’s publisher,” he told the podcast. g1 belongs. “Warner will negotiate for me,” says WK.
“As with other remixes that have been made, these agreements are always at the rate of 20%. That would be fair because I only did the modeling of the chorus. See one song with the other,” he argues.
Who Treyce involved in the composition is the publisher M13. O g1 spoke to Mailson Ribeiro, owner of the company. He confirmed that the deal is complete, and he sees no problem in giving the writers of “Say It Right” a portion of the rights to the chorus tune.

Long sequence…
Since each song has multiple writers and companies representing it, negotiation is not easy.
According to the publisher Sony, the company takes care of 50% of the copyright of “Say it right”. The rest is managed by Warner and Peermusic.
The shares each composer has in the rights to the music are negotiated by them when registering the work. The split ratio between Nelly, Timbaland and Danja for “Say It Right” has not been reported.
When “Lovezinho” was first recorded, WK retained 80% of the copyright and Treyce retained 20%.
O g1 also tried to contact Nelly Furtado through her agency in Canada but received no response.
