Corruption in the EU Parliament: Detention of Vice President Kaili extended

The former EU MP is expected to remain in custody for another two months. She is accused of corruption by the governments of Qatar and Morocco.

Former vice-president Eva Kaili remains trapped in the bribery scandal in the European Parliament. The Greek’s pre-trial detention has been extended by two months, the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Brussels announced on Friday. Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella’s detention has been extended for a month.

The bribery scandal, which became public in late 2022, concerns an alleged influence on EU Parliament decisions by the governments of Qatar and Morocco. The Public Ministry accused the accused of corruption, money laundering and association with a criminal organization.

The alleged mastermind Antonio Panzeri is also in custody. In January, he signed an agreement with the Public Ministry in which he pledged to make a comprehensive contribution to clarifying the scandal.

Kaili’s partner, Francesco Giorgi, was allowed to leave prison under certain conditions at the end of February. The Italian has to continue his detention under house arrest with an electronic ankle bracelet. Because of a possible involvement in the scandal, European parliamentarian Andrea Cozzolino is also under house arrest following a court ruling in Naples.
