Several hundred Israeli peace activists traveled to the West Bank for a “solidarity visit” following serious riots by Israeli settlers against Palestinians.
When they tried to enter the small town of Huwara, which has been affected by the riots, there were clashes with the Israeli army, several Israeli media reported today. Soldiers also reportedly threw stun grenades into the crowd. There were no reports of injuries. The army has yet to comment on the incident.
Palestinian residents welcomed the arrival of Israeli activists, wrote the Haaretz newspaper. According to the Times of Israel, a delegation of European diplomats also traveled to Huwara.
A central connecting road, which is also used by many Israeli settlers in the northern West Bank, runs through the small town of Huwara with about 7,400 inhabitants. Activists also criticized the fact that settlers are still allowed to drive through the site, although they have been banned from entering.
