But no cancer wrong diagnosis costs a man his penis

A doctor amputated a patient’s penis, to rid him of his tumor. But the man did not have cancer, as it turned out later.

In Italy, a bumbling urologist is being investigated for mistakenly amputating a patient’s penis. He had misdiagnosed the man with a tumor four weeks earlier. The 30-year-old surgeon is accused of causing serious injuries to the unidentified patient from the municipality of Arezzo, in the Italian region of Tuscany. He performed the operation on November 13, 2018 at the San Donato Hospital in Arezzo.

The operation went well. But when the amputated penis was pathologically examined, the catastrophe came to light: the tissue was healthy and cancer-free! The organ was amputated due to a misdiagnosis. The desperate patient now demands compensation from the clumsy doctor for the maiming. The first court hearing is scheduled for March 9, 2023.

Not removing enough cancer

A man from France experienced the exact opposite in 2014, as Francebleu reports. In 2014, the then 30-year-old father of three learned that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer of the epithelial tissue of the penis. A urologist at the hospital in Nantes, where the man was treated, tried to remove as much of the tumor as possible without damaging the organ.

But the cancer continued to spread throughout the penis. It caused the man such “insane” pain that he even considered amputating his own penis. “I had the mower and was preparing for the amputation in the garage,” says the man. “It was my wife who stopped me.”
