“I feel like I won the Stanley Cup,” laughs Gisèle Lullaby.
And she’s not necessarily wrong. Often referred to as the Drag Olympiad, the RuPaul’s Drag Race phenomenon has been producing true stars for nearly 15 years. Like Trixie Mattel, Bianca Del Rio, Violet Chachki and others at Jinkx Monsoon, Gisèle Lullaby has become an overnight star in the eyes of fans around the world.
It wasn’t until she was recognized in an Australian shopping center – with no wig, blush or glitter – that Gisèle Lullaby realized the extent of her popularity. Barely a month after his coronation, even Simon Gosselin, the man behind the character, had lost his anonymity.
“It’s completely unreal when you think about it. I realize I have fans in Brazil or Thailand, places I’ve never set foot! But in the end it’s all positive. I worked so hard to get here, I want to take full advantage of it,” says the Montreal drag queen.
Celebrated in Paris
In fact, the world has become his playground in recent months. The one who had never performed outside of Canada before was celebrated on the Casino de Paris stage last month. As a special guest of the Drag Race France tour, she joined her peers in the City of Light.
But this week, Gisèle Lullaby will be putting on her shoes on the boards of the Olympia in Montreal for the War on the Catwalk tour. She shares the limelight with some of the biggest stars in the drag race stable, namely Kylie Sonique Love, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Silky Nutmeg Ganache, Heidi N Closet, Jasmine Kennedie and Jimbo.
“It feels good to be back home, putting on a show at home. Olympia is practically opposite Cabaret Mado, where I’ve been performing since my debut. It’s really exciting,” she says.
The following…
Gisèle Lullaby may have six months until her reign, but she has no intention of resting on her laurels or spending her time polishing the scepter and crown she has won. Because the real work, she confirms, begins “after the end of the competition”.
What’s next for him? Hard to say, some projects will be kept secret for now. But the drag queen doesn’t hide it: she dreams of the stage as well as television and cinema. And why not, a possible return to competition for a new season of Drag Race. “I’d love to experience that again, but only if it’s a season that only brings together winners,” says Gisèle Lullaby.
♦ The broadcast war on the catwalk will be presented Tuesday night at the Olympia in Montreal.
