PP MP Alberto Casero, whom the Supreme Court today removed one step from the bank accused of crimes of administrative evasion and embezzlement of public funds, this Friday voluntarily resigned his post as MP, according to PP sources. The former mayor of Trujillo made the decision so as not to harm the party, these sources point out, who say he made it before he was notified of the coroner’s order. The deputy who was organizing secretary on the stage of Pablo Casado had requested his withdrawal from militancy in the PP this morning but asked to keep the seat. While management pondered what to do while awaiting the judge’s order, Casero waived his record and cleared the PP of a problem.
Judge Andrés Palomo of the Supreme Court has dropped investigations into the popular parliamentarian for administrative evasions and misappropriation of public funds related to five service contracts, sponsorships or agreements he signed as mayor of Trujillo (Cáceres) in 2017 and 2018 allegedly skipping judicial administrative procedures. In his order, the instructor gives the prosecutor 10 days to request the opening of a hearing by the formulation of an indictment or the dismissal.
Casero, who rose to fame in February 2022 for his mistake in the vote that led to Congressional approval of labor reform, testified before the Supreme Court instructor in June and admitted he had signed some contracts while he was mayor they did not conform to legal procedure, but he defended that there were only “administrative irregularities,” never a crime. His explanations failed to convince the instructor, who in September asked the Trial Chamber to seek permission from Congress to proceed against the MP. The chamber voted on it in October and approved unanimously.
In the order on the PP deputy communicated by the Supreme Court this Friday, the judge explains that the facts attributed to Casero indicate that during his time as mayor he entered into service contracts, sponsorships or agreements with various individuals and organizations opposed to ” all kinds of formalities” required by law. The investigation focuses on five contracts that have cost Trujillo City Council more than 100,000 euros.
The resignation of the People’s Deputy from his seat frees the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, from a political problem former Socialist MP Juan Bernardo Fuentes Curbelo. After the PSOE Fuentes Curbelo learned of his alleged involvement in the network, it suspended him from militancy for hours and forced his resignation from the post of deputy. The number three of the PSOE, Santos Cerdán, demanded it in a tense personal conversation. In Casero’s case, it was he who first asked the PP to suspend his membership and then gave up his act without the party even asking him to do so. Management didn’t shut the door to demand it, but in the end it was he who did it of his own accord.
