An apocalyptic scene was unfolding in Frederick, Maryland when an overturned gas tanker erupted into a massive fireball, killing the driver and setting fire to nearby homes and cars.

Hazmat teams, along with emergency response teams, have responded to the incident, reporting reports of a “burnt smell” in the area.

Footage filmed by local residents, some of whom were seen gaping near the massive blaze, shows large plumes of black smoke, ash and embers rising from the crash site.

The Maryland State Police said the accident occurred on Route 15 in Maryland and the tanker’s driver was killed in the incident. No other deaths or injuries were immediately reported.

According to a tweet from MDSP, the freeway between Route 50 and 7th Street was closed.

Frederick’s Division of Fire & Rescue Services (DFRS) personnel were also at the scene of “an apparent tanker explosion,” Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor said in a Facebook post.

The mayor is asking residents to avoid the area, but footage circulating on social media shows residents being drawn into the tragic incident like moths to a flame, some standing inches from the blaze.

MDSP said in a tweet, “Several vehicles and homes were damaged by flames from the fire caused by the overturned tanker.”

The Environment Agency was also informed of the incident.

The truck reportedly crashed near Apple Road, causing at least “some of the fuel load to veer off the road and into storm drains,” Atlas News reported.
