Climate activists defaced an artwork near the German Bundestag on Saturday in the latest act of vandalism by environmental protesters.
Members of The Last Generation threw a black liquid over a series of glass plates depicting 19 articles of the German constitution. The demonstrators then put up placards reading “Oil or fundamental rights?” on the facade. in German.

The work of art by the Israeli artist Dani Karavan was exhibited in front of the German Bundestag and is intended to convey the importance of freedom of expression and assembly.
The group said in a statement that the German government is not protecting citizens’ “fundamental rights” due to the country’s continued use of fossil fuels.

The vandalism was heavily criticized by German officials, who questioned the message sent by the act.
“These are the fundamental rights on which the Last Generation protesters themselves base the justification for their actions,” Parliament Speaker Baerbel Bas said in a statement. “I can only hope that the glass panels of the artwork were not permanently damaged.”
