Andor star Diego Luna is ready for the end of the Disney+ Star Wars series and Rogue One prequel after season two, citing his mental health.

Andor: Diego Luna as Cassian Andor wears a thick jacket

Diego Luna, star of the critically acclaimed prequel series Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Andor says the show’s short length is good for his sanity.

Luna spoke to Variety while filming season 2 of Andor on set in London. While Luna looks forward to continuing the story of burgeoning rebel outlaw Cassian Andor, he finds the years of filming schedules and months of post-production and digital re-shooting hectic. “This is the last season for Andor,” said Luna. “It’s just a two-season show that’s really important to my mental health. But knowing this is the end, I want to enjoy it and get the most out of this experience.”

Season 1 of Andor followed Cassian’s complicated recruitment into the early Rebel Alliance, while the second and final season will more directly enact the events of the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This means that Season 2’s storyline will have a faster pace than Season 1 and will introduce more Rogue One characters like the droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk). “What this character is doing in Rogue One is quite remarkable, and what we’re building shows what has to happen in a person’s life to be willing to sacrifice everything,” said Luna. “For me, this has always been a story where the people who bring about change, who can be called heroes, are ordinary people doing extraordinary things.”

How Andor changes the Star Wars formula

After premiering in September 2022, Andor was praised by critics for its darker, more mature tone compared to other Star Wars projects like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. The show ignores several common Star Wars hallmarks like Jedi or the Force, instead focusing on the struggles of ordinary people suffering under the newly formed Empire. Alongside Cassian Andor, the show also follows rebel leaders Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) and the mysterious Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård) as they begin the chaotic process of uniting various anti-imperial groups under a single rebel banner.

Between Season 1 and Season 2, Luna took a break from television and returned to theater. The actor starred in a much smaller stage show in Madrid, Spain called Cada vez nos despedimos major for two months. Luna got his big break in acting after starring in Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron’s road trip film Y tu mamá también (Gravity, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban). Since then, Luna has appeared in Elysium, The Book of Life, and the Narcos spin-off show Narcos: Mexico. Luna received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in Andor.

Season 1 of Star Wars: Andor is currently streaming on Disney+, while Season 2 is currently scheduled to premiere sometime in 2024.
