Windows 11 on an Apple Silicon Mac: VMware Fusion 13 on the way – MacGeneration

The use of Windows 11 on an Apple Silicon Mac has recently been possible with the approval of Microsoft. In a previous article, we performed the test by installing the ARM version of Windows 11 with Parallels Desktop. But it’s not the only virtualization application on the Mac. VMware assures that Fusion 13 supports Windows 11 on Apple Silicon machines.

Except that Fusion 13 does not allow for a satisfying experience, which explains why this second part is much shorter than the first. Parallels shows the possibilities, VMware shows the limits.

A very complicated installation

Before you begin, you’ll need a few things, starting with the Apple Silicon version of VMware Fusion 13, which is free for personal, non-commercial use. If you have a (free) account you should be able To on this page and get a serial number.

You’ll also need the ARM version of Windows 11. It’s a bit strange, but the easiest way to download it is to use… the demo version of Parallels Desktop! Starting an installation will trigger the download of the installation image, which you can get from the ~/Downloads folder for use with Fusion. Finally, if you want to try more than one Windows 11 trial, you need a Windows 11 Pro license, which is worth less than $200.

In VMware Fusion, select the menu “File” > “New”, then “Install from disc or image” and select the image of Windows 11. In the next window, enable “UEFI Secure Boot”.

Don’t forget to check the box (not like here).

The next window, partly in English, only asks you to choose a password, which of course must not be lost. Finally, you can adjust the virtual machine settings to your needs, knowing that the default parameters are a bit low. We recommend four CPU cores and 6-8GB of memory if you have a 16GB Mac.
