(ANSA) — BEIJING, MARCH 5 — Taipei “again calls on China to face the fact that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are not connected and to respect the Taiwanese people’s adherence to freedom and democracy.”
This is the response of the Mainland Affairs Council, the Taiwan office that handles relations with Beijing, to assurances from Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, who in his opening speech at the National People’s Congress assured that the communist leadership would take the field from “resolute action” against attempts at independence on the island and that China will press ahead with the process of “peaceful reunification”.
