Avalanche at Mont Albert: more fear than damage according to SQ

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) has announced that it has stopped the search operation on Mont Albert in Gaspésie Park that started yesterday afternoon. Three people were injured in the events, including one who had to be taken to hospital.

“According to our information, no one is missing,” explains SQ communications sergeant Stéphane Tremblay. However, teams from Avalanche Quebec and the Quebec Association of Search and Rescue Volunteers (AQBRS) will continue to work on the ground.

According to the Avalanche Quebec organization, the Chic Chocs mountain posed a moderate risk of landslides over the course of Saturday. However, snow fell around 3 p.m.

On its Facebook page, the organization explained that a moderate index “leaves the possibility of human intervention being triggered,” but that a natural avalanche is less likely to occur under such conditions.

Avalanche Quebec teams are still on the south slope of Mount Albert conducting the survey.

According to initial observations by the organization based in Sainte-Anne-des-Monts in Gaspésie, the avalanche was accidentally triggered by a skier circling “on the top of the Patrouilleurs wall”.
