Authorities have not released the victim’s name or connection to the accused, but Energetic City, which covers local news in northern British Columbia, identified the woman as Kiara Agnew, a Dawson Creek resident.
A crowdfunding campaign was posted on the GoFundMe website by relatives to raise funds for the repatriation of Kiara’s body.
“What was supposed to be a dream trip for her birthday party in Mexico with her boyfriend turned into a nightmare on March 3, 2023 when our family was notified of her death at the hands of someone she loved, who turned out to be a monster,” she described Family.
Lake View Credit Union, where Ms Agnew worked, also mourned her death.
“This is a devastating tragedy and loss to our community. We send all our love and confidence to all those affected,” the financial institution wrote on its Facebook page.
