New head of anti corruption office in Ukraine appointed

Months later, Ukraine again had a head of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau. With the appointment of a new leader, Prime Minister Denis Schmyhal said today that his country has fulfilled all of the “seven EU recommendations” for the start of accession talks. This shows “our determination to start negotiations later this year”.

Semen Kryvonos has been appointed as the new head of the Office for Fighting Corruption in Ukraine. The 40-year-old lawyer, little known to the public, recently headed an authority on architecture and urban planning.

According to anti-corruption official Vitaly Shabunin, Kryvonos has not yet investigated the corruption. In addition, he is close to the presidential office, criticized the renowned activist on Facebook.

Brussels granted Ukraine candidate status in June 2022, four months into the Russian war of aggression. At the same time, the EU has been pushing for major reforms, including strengthening the rule of law and fighting corruption, and implementing a law aimed at curbing the influence of the oligarchs.
