What happened
A man from Leominster, Massachusetts, has been arrested and charged with attempting to open an emergency exit door on a United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Boston and then attempting to stab an assistant in the neck. Francisco Severo Torres33, was charged with attempting to disrupt flight crew members and flight attendants with a dangerous weapon. Torres was arrested at Boston’s Logan International Airport and after an initial appearance today before US District Court Judge Dein, he was held pending a hearing scheduled for March 9, 2023.
According to accounting records, on March 5, 2023, Torres was a passenger on a United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Boston. Approximately 45 minutes before touchdown, the flight crew in the cockpit received a warning that a starboard side door, located between the first class and tourist areas of the aircraft, was disarmed. Upon inspection, a flight attendant found that the door latch handle had been moved from the fully locked position — about a quarter of the way to the unlocked position — and that the emergency release lever had been moved to the “deactivated” position.
The flight attendant reported this to the captain and flight crew after securing the emergency door and slide. In subsequent discussions, another flight attendant reported seeing Torres at the door and believing Torres had tampered with the door. A flight attendant then confronted the man about tampering with the door, to which he allegedly responded by asking if there were any cameras showing he had done it. According to court documents, the flight attendant then told the captain that she believed Torres posed a threat to the plane and that the captain needed to land the plane as soon as possible. Shortly thereafter, Torres reportedly rose from his seat and approached the starboard side door, where two flight attendants were in the aisle. One of the flight attendants saw Torres mumble something he couldn’t hear. Torres then allegedly shoved a broken metal spoon toward one of the flight attendants with a sharp movement, hitting the flight attendant three times in the neck area.
The passengers then confronted Torres and he was restrained with the assistance of the flight crew. Torres was arrested immediately after the flight arrived in Boston.
The charges carry up to life imprisonment, up to five years probation, and a fine of up to $250,000.
