What is the NFL Franchise Tag?
The franchise tag is a designation NFL teams can use to retain a player as an unrestricted free agent and sign them to a permanent contract for another year. They can be exclusive or non-exclusive tags.
What are exclusive and non-exclusive franchise tags?
Exclusive tags means the contract cannot be less than either the average of the top 5 salaries in that position or 120% of the player’s salary from the previous season, whichever is greater. It also means that the player cannot negotiate with other teams and cannot sign with another team if they decline the offer.
Non exclusive tags mean that the contract cannot be less than either the average of the top five international goals at that player’s position or 120% of the player’s salary in the previous season, whichever is greater. However, unlike the exclusive tag, the player is allowed to negotiate with other teams and if they receive an offer, their current team has a chance to pass. If the team decides against a match, it is entitled to two first-round draft picks.

The transition day is another designation NFL teams can use to keep a player as an unrestricted free agent and sign them to a permanent contract for another year. The contract must be at least the average of the top 10 salaries at the player’s position and there is no guaranteed compensation. Additionally, players are allowed to negotiate with other teams, and if the original team refuses to honor an offer, they will not receive draft picks.
