The Argentine Senate will recognize the work of the grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo

This organization will also be recognized for its contribution to building civic consciousness and collective memory during an event scheduled for 18:00 local time in the Blue Room of the Legislative Palace.

The President of the Grandmothers, Estela de Carlotto, and other members of this group such as Sonia Torres, Carmen Ledda Barreiro and Buscarita Imperí will accept the award.

This mention is awarded by the Senate to natural or legal persons for a work of great relevance in areas such as science, culture, politics, social affairs, sport, economy, education, ethics and morals.

Likewise, it recognizes those who, based on the common good and in defense of the sovereignty, independence and integration of peoples, have made achievements of interest to their communities.

The award was supposed to be given to grandmothers last year, but the act has been postponed.

After the 1976 coup, the established military regime disappeared 30,000 Argentines and hundreds of children were kidnapped with their parents or born in captivity.

Secret maternity hospitals were operated in the former Navy School of Mechanics, Campo de Mayo, Pozo de Banfield and other detention and torture centers and 500 children were separated from their mothers. Some of them were given to military families, others were abandoned and sold.

To date, the grandmothers have found 132 of these little ones and are still searching for the remaining grandchildren and great-grandchildren who also suffered the consequences of the horrors of the dictatorship.

In addition, they call for the punishment of those responsible for these crimes.
