Ukraine: “The hardest winter is over”

Ukraine believes that the difficulties with electricity supply have been overcome for now – unless further Russian attacks damage the system. In the last 25 days there has been no power failure and no deficit is in sight. That’s what the head of the Ukrenerho utility Volodymyr Kudrytskyj said today on Ukrainian television.

“The hardest winter in our history is over,” he said in Kiev. “The power system is now able to meet existing consumption and that is a very good sign for all of us.”

successful repairs

Kudryzkyj attributed the improved situation to successful repairs to the power grid and thorough maintenance of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants. Because of the spring flood, the hydroelectric plants produced more electricity. Higher temperatures mean lower consumption.

Since last October, Russia has repeatedly fired missiles aimed at destroying Ukraine’s electricity and heat supplies. In all parts of the country, this has led to hourly and daily interruptions to electricity, district heating and water.

However, Ukrainians always managed to fix the broken network. Generators for power generation and transformers were shipped from abroad. Electricity imports also helped, Kudryzkyj said.
