A Peruvian judge this Thursday (9) extended the preventive detention of deposed former President Pedro Castillo, who had been jailed since December on charges of rebellion, from 18 to 36 months after his failed attempt at a selfcoup. The information was confirmed by the judiciary.
The 53yearold former president, who is already serving an 18month sentence, is expected to remain behind bars until December 2025 and face charges of crimes for which he is being investigated by the State Department.
“The Supreme Court for Preliminary Investigations has ordered Pedro Castillo to 36 months in preventive detention for being the alleged leader of a criminal organization for crimes committed in Petroperú and in the Ministry of Transport, Housing, Construction and Sanitation,” wrote the Peruvian judiciary on twitter .
The verdict against Castillo was delivered by Judge Juan Carlos Checkley during a virtual hearing broadcast by the Peruvian justice system’s television network.
“We will do what the law allows us, we will appeal,” said Castillo, who attended the hearing at the prison.
The 36month prison sentence also fell on former transport minister Juan Silva, who is on the run from justice, while former housing minister Geiner Alvarado will be at liberty to respond to the trial.
