The history of Daylight Saving Time in the United States dates back to an ironic essay that scholar Benjamin Franklin wrote for The Journal of Paris in 1784, entitled An Economic Project to Lower the Cost of Light. The inventor wrote that Parisians could save money on candles if they woke up earlier and took advantage of the daylight. However, it was more of a joke and nothing came of it.

During World War I, Germany began implementing daylight saving time on May 1, 1916 to save fuel. The rest of Europe soon adopted daylight saving time.

In the United States, it wasn’t passed until two years later with the enactment of the Standard Time Act on March 19, 1918 (also known as the Calder Act because it was introduced to the Senate by William M. Calder). This law introduced United States Standard Time and Daylight Saving Time and defined five time zones for the country.

Daylight Saving Time was later abolished by Congress, despite President Woodrow Wilson’s veto, making it a local option for each state. New York was one of the states that kept daylight saving time and, due to their financial situation, prompted other states to introduce it.

During World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt instituted a new nationwide Daylight Saving Time, which applied all year round and was called “War Time” from 1945 and lasted until Sunday, September 30.

After that date, the lack of a federal daylight saving time meant that different locations had different hours in certain months. This prompted the transportation industry to push for federal regulation in 1962, resulting in the Uniform Time Act of 1966, which was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson.

Since then the schedule has been maintained with some test periods (it was carried out for a full year in 1974) while the time during which it was applied during the year was extended.

Will Daylight Saving Time Be Permanent in the United States?

In 2022, the United States Senate passed legislation to make daylight saving time permanent. If approved, it would come into effect in November 2023 at the end of daylight saving time that year.

Similar proposals have surfaced since 2015, arguing that the living and working patterns of modern citizens are no longer compatible with changing the clock twice a year. Daylight Saving Time will no longer be used in Mexico since 2022.
