(ANSA) — TEHRAN, MARCH 11 — Iran has announced that it has reached an agreement to purchase Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets with Russia. This was reported by official Iranian media. “Following the lifting of the (UN) embargo on the purchase of conventional arms in October 2020, Iran has concluded the contract for the purchase of Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets,” reported the Irna news agency, citing the representation of the Islamic Republic under the United Nations. The agency did not provide any further information about the contract. “The Sukhoi Su-35 were technically acceptable to Iran (…) and Russia has declared its willingness to sell them to the Islamic Republic,” writes Irna.
Iran and Russia have been negotiating the delivery of Russian fighter jets to Tehran for years. The United States is threatening severe sanctions to any country trading with Iranian forces and has long said it is alarmed by the “dangerous” escalation in military cooperation between Moscow and Tehran, with Iran accused of drones deployed in Ukraine delivered, which Tehran denies.
According to the Iranian mission to the UN, cited by IRNA, the deal on fighter jets “has nothing to do with the war in Ukraine, as there is absolutely no military cooperation between Iran and Russia in Ukraine.” (HAND).
