Strike at Héma-Québec: Collections maintained, appointments postponed

Another day of strike by Héma-Québec workers in Montreal on Monday should not affect people who want to donate blood.

For the fifth time since last July, members of the Greater Montreal-based Héma-Québec Nurses’ Union will strike on Monday, weeks before the fourth anniversary of the end of their collective bargaining agreement.

Union spokesman Gabriel Danis told QMI Agency that the strike will not affect blood collection and other blood products. On the other hand, appointments scheduled for Monday could be postponed, he said.

The union is demanding equal pay for its nurses and nursing assistants with those working in the public health network.

“Employees perform valuable services for the entire population. Without them, it is impossible to meet the population’s need for blood and other human biological products. We call on management to live up to their responsibilities in order to guarantee their employees attractive and respectful working conditions,” said union president Nancy Landry.

The industrial dispute has been going on at Héma-Québec for years, as the employees’ collective bargaining agreement expired on March 31, 2019.
