A referee arrested for assault: the victim would be an underage player

A 42-year-old man was arrested in Quebec on Sunday morning for assaulting a child at the Center de Glaces.

The Quebec City Police Department (SPVQ) was called to an adult who allegedly physically assaulted a youth at around 9:25 am at 999 Avenue de Rochebelle.

The victim would be an approximately 10-year-old ice hockey player who attended a game at the Robert Chevalier rink directed by the suspect in question.

According to witnesses at the scene, the referee “deliberately” elbowed the young ice hockey player in the abdomen for an unknown reason. However, the child was not injured.

According to one of the Arena resurfacer operators present this morning, bystanders, including the victim’s parents, reacted violently when the man in the striped sweater punched the boy.

The same Ice Center employee claims there was “no apparent reason for the referee to want to specifically target this young person” and that the gesture was not intended to end a skirmish.

“The man was released a few hours later with a promise to appear,” SPVQ spokeswoman Sandra Dion said.
