Welcome to the Oscars Red Carpet 101, where we’ll delve into red carpet history, a subject I never thought about until the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences rolled out their latest carpet for the 95th Annual Oscars last week and it wasn’t…red. However, the shocking turn of events has less to do with previous awards shows (no, it’s not about the slap in the face) and more to do with the overhaul of the event’s aesthetic. Below is everything you need to know about the non-red red carpet.

On Sunday, the official red carpet show, Countdown to the Oscars, airs at 6:30 p.m. ET on ABC. (Hosts are Vanessa Hudgens, Lilly Singh, and Ashley Graham.) E! will have his own starting at 5pm ET (hosted by Laverne Cox). Arrivals begin shortly before and we will update our own coverage. The red carpet is live now, here.

ABC is your one-stop shop for all of the Oscars this year, and if you’re one of the lucky ones with a cable subscription, you can also watch them on ABC.com or the ABC app. Can’t get cable login? No reason to worry. You can also stream the red carpet on Hulu Live TV, YouTubeTV, AT&T TV, and FuboTV, which often offer free trials if you’re not already a member of those subscription services.

For the first time since 1961, the carpet isn’t red outside of the Oscars. What color should the carpet be? “Sparkling wine.” Oscars creative consultants Lisa Love and Raúl Àvila chose the color to make the transition from a daytime carpet arrival to an evening event more seamless. The creative duo also decided to cover the carpet with a tent this year to protect the stars from the daytime weather and add more evening spirit.

Host Jimmy Kimmel had a different theory about the carpet’s color change. “People have been asking if there will be trouble this year. Of course I hope not. But if it is, then I think the decision to go for a champagne carpet over a red carpet shows how confident we are that no blood will be spilled,” he told the Hollywood Reporter at the unveiling of the carpet at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood earlier this week.

It’ night for movies means almost everyone will be there, but we have a few favorites to keep an eye out for. The nominees include some iconic actors like Everything Everywhere All at Once favorites Michelle Yeoh (who has turned heads on the red carpet, including this Armani Privé column dress for the Golden Globes), Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis as well other veteran actors such as Brendan Fraser, Angela Bassett, Cate Blanchett (aka Lydia Tár), Michelle Williams and Colin Farrell. There are also many more recent nominees that we’re excited about as well, such as Paul Mescal, Stephanie Hsu, Austin Butler, Brian Tyree Henry, Hong Chau and Ana De Armas.

Presenters include Ariana DeBose, Florence Pugh, Nicole Kidman, Jessica Chastain, Riz Ahmed, Glenn Close, Samuel L Jackson, Harrison Ford, Salma Hayek Pinault, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Hudson, Antonio Banderas, Andrew Garfield, Melissa McCarthy, Mindy Kaling, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Pedro Pascal. Oh, and did we mention Rihanna is performing?!?!? Yes, it’s gonna be a great night.

Keep in touch.
