Collision on Highway 20: Driver charged with fatal driving

Mathieu Veillette, 24, has been charged with driving in a fatal accident Saturday night on Highway 20 in Sainte-Hélène-de-Bagot, Montérégie. When the accused appeared on Sunday, the courts opposed his release.

The driver is also accused of causing bodily harm to two adults and two minors, whose anonymity is protected by law.

Because of a violent collision between km 152 and 153, the Sûreté du Québec was called to intervene at 11:30 p.m.

A white pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction on the westbound freeway collided with another car carrying five people.

The driver and three occupants of the crashed car were taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The fourth passenger, an 18-year-old man, was thrown from the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. His death was pronounced in the hospital.

The driver of the van, a 24-year-old Ontario man, was not injured. He was arrested for being unfit to drive.

A delivery truck is towed away.

The driver of the van was driving on the federal highway 20 against the direction of travel.
