On the eve of his visit to China, President Lula should consider strategic and crucial information for the future of the world. He will be received in a country that is increasing its defense budget by 7.2 percent in 2023.
It’s something like the BRL 1 trillion in armaments and wartime logistics. The same investment has already been made in 2022. It’s a mountain of money. The conversation is serious, the message is getting across and the only thing that happens is arrogant heads of state continuing to play globalism on a war board.
Lula’s host, Xi Jinping, assumes the presidency of China’s military commission and places great emphasis on giving direct orders to the commanders of his gargantuan army.
“We must improve the integrated use of our resources and increase our overall ability to deal with strategic risks, defend our interests and achieve our goals,” said the Chinese leader, making it clear that his country is ready to respond to any attack the sovereignty of its borders or its commercial ambitions.
One cannot accuse China of something that is very common in the discourse of other powers, including the US and Russia. NATO expansionism and the war in Ukraine are proof that the world is in a struggle for territory, a stupidity that seemed buried with the Cold War. China does not do this.
It doesn’t want an inch of foreign land and doesn’t export ideology (like the former Soviet Union did). The Middle Kingdom used the wasted energy used by other major countries in disputes over the past two decades to grow economically and become the second largest economy on earth.
What we now see with extreme clarity is that China has not been neglectful, on the contrary, it has always prepared for any scenario of war or external threat. As is well known, internal threats were always met with an iron fist.
Unfortunately, everything indicates that the geopolitics of the world will soon undergo profound changes. The nuclear threat is already part of the daily news. The tone of the confrontation rises every day. And then there’s the unpredictable North Korea with its insane offensives against Japan.
There is no reason for Brazil to enter this gigantic fight. However, neutrality is an evernarrowing pacifist fantasy. Times will be difficult.
