Nikolaus Marschik’s rise to second place in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Nikolaus Marschik succeeds Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal as General Secretary. He was chief of staff and ambassador in Berlin and Brussels.

Ambassador in Berlin, then until recently at the EU representation in Brussels and, as of September, Secretary General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: these are the most important career posts for Nikolaus Marschik, who also takes over the management of the law firm international (Section 1 ) ministry. Until 2018, the two functions were linked and occupied by a single person. This was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs some six months before the casting – along with the appointment of Elisabeth Kornfeind as head of the Europe and Economy Section and Georg Stillfried as head of the Department of Consular Affairs.

Marschik will succeed Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal, who reached legal retirement age a few months ago. The career diplomat, formerly head of crisis management and citizen services at the Foreign Ministry, government and media spokesman and UN deputy secretary general in New York, will leave the diplomatic service in the summer.
