A NYC couple claims they found a dead rodent in a soup they ordered at a popular Koreatown restaurant over the weekend, but the restaurant dismisses the claim as “nonsense.”
Eunice Lucero-Lee released a series of photos and videos of what appeared to be a dead black rat swimming in the soup she and her husband shipped from Gammeeok in Manhattan on Saturday.
“We ordered sogogi gukbap, which is a kind of hearty Korean beef soup,” Lucero-Lee told NewsBreak via email.
The Post contacted Lucero-Lee, a senior editor at Hearst, for comment.
She reported that she has filed a lawsuit against the restaurant, which also has a location in Fort Lee, NJ.
“After seeking legal counsel my husband and I are now happy to share something that happened to us over the weekend,” Lucero-Lee wrote on Instagram this week.
“We ordered from a well-known restaurant called Gammeeok in K-Town and found the most disgusting part of our meal.”
She continued, “We have been going to this restaurant for a decade and are otherwise proud supporters of Asian cuisine and culture. This incident is in no way intended to incite racial hatred or prejudice and I will have a problem with anyone who uses these posts to fit this narrative.
Lucero-Lee said the couple shared their claims to “spread awareness and hopefully ensure the right people are held accountable.”

She also stated that she contacted the NYC Health Department. The agency has a “C” rating for the Manhattan location on its website.
A Jan. 18 inspection revealed multiple suspected hygiene violations, including a food-contact surface that was not properly washed, rinsed and disinfected after each use; and food, supplies and equipment not protected from a potential source of contamination.
The Post reached out to the health department and Gammeeok for comment.
In a series of Instagram posts on Wednesday, the restaurant said the couple’s claims “made no sense.”
“We’re open 24 hours and there’s always at least 3 or 4 people in the kitchen,” the restaurant wrote. “As you can see in the video, it makes no sense for a rat to avoid people and climb into a pot on a hot fire.”
Gammeeok added, “When we transferred the soup, we served it four times with a ladle while the staff watched with their eyes. If there was such a big mouse, there is no way I would have missed it. There is also a video recording of the shooting process. We checked the whole soup making process, but we didn’t find any problems.”
The restaurant claims the couple wrote a Yelp review six years ago about finding “a big bug” in a takeout soup.
“This is a rare lifetime experience for most people,” Gammeeok wrote. “You are removing the review now. Why?”
